My husband and I are visiting Scotland and Scandinavia following our retiral.
We emigrated to Australia 45 years ago and are two weeks into a 10-week stay.
We visited Dundee’s Law on Friday to take photographs and unfortunately I left my handbag behind.
It contained quite a large amount of British and Australian currency, along with bank cards.
It was approximately 15 minutes before I noticed I had mislaid it.
We drove back up the Law, desperately hoping, but not really believing, I would ever see it or the contents again.
You cannot imagine my delight to discover a young local man, David, had found it and was asking around to find its owner.
I cannot thank him enough for its return, but I also thank him for restoring my faith in human nature.
These days you only ever hear about bad news, but this good Samaritan has really made my holiday. — Emma Webster, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Spectacular performance
I have just returned from Sounds Spectacular at the Whitehall Theatre in Dundee and felt compelled to put pen to paper.
What a truly fantastic event.
It was the 25th anniversary show and it seemed that everyone wanted to raise their game.
The whole cast performed admirably and all of us in the audience were singing and tapping our feet.
Well done to everyone. — Dancing Feet.
Not enough rank space in Dundee
Regarding the letter from Yellow Peril, do you honestly think members of the taxi trade, after paying Dundee City Council £195 for an Operator’s Licence, enjoy sitting on yellow lines?
It is clear to see that there is not enough rank space in Dundee.
We are being moved daily from double yellow lines and bus stops.
I’m sure the trade is in agreement with me that the use of the above is both unfair to bus drivers and other motorists but we have no other option.
Dundee City Council has been promising the trade more rank space for years, and it is plain to see that none has been provided.
Have a thought for the trade members who pay for their licenses only after doing so, they find they have an attachment to it saying anyone caught on bus stops will be issued a penalty and reprimanded by the Licensing Committee. — John Reilly.
MP wages need to be kept high
I respond to the letter which condemned Dundee West MP Jim McGovern for his lavish expenses claims.
I contribute this suggestion, which is relevant to the expense debate as a whole.
Despite the fact that many MPs may claim in expenses more than you or I earn in the space of a month, we need to continue to offer MPs the highest possible salary and hence the best possible lifestyle.
How else are we to attract the best and most intelligent people to run our country?
If there is a continuing expenses review causing the facility to become heavily restricted, then the position of MP becomes less desirable, and hence fails to attract the highest quality of worker.
It may be a difficult pill to swallow, but this is a point that no one seems to be making.
If we wish to continue to attract the most intelligent people to become Members of Parliament, then we must takes steps to either permanently raise their fixed salary, or continue to offer them access to an expenses account. — Traditional.
Susan needs break
I am like millions of people who heard and enjoyed Susan Boyle and wished her every success.
But each time I read about her now, she has had a breakdown of some sort.
It seems like her rapid ascension into the ranks of superstardom has come at a cost.
I feel she should take time off and not feel obliged to take part in the Britain’s Got Talent tour.
I know she has a problem, but, at the end of the day, if she is going to cancel shows and let people down who support her, it’s not fair to them. — Jimmy Borland.
Not fooling anyone
I was interested to read Councillor Kevin Keenan’s letter on the subject of sub-standard roads. The question is: why has he only noticed the problems now that he is no longer Leader of the Administration?
The reality is that he was in a position to fix these problems. He, along with other members of his administration, who have suddenly noticed the problems in the city now they aren’t in power, are not fooling the people of Dundee. — Political Connoisseur.
