| Householders claim noisy lorries and supply vehicles have been turning up as early as 5am at the Tesco Extra store, waking up nearby homes.
Arlene Jeffrey, who lives at Dee Gardens, overlooking the store, said she and her family are constantly disturbed in the early hours.
“I am at my wits’ end,” she said.
“There has been an ongoing problem for a long time and last week I had to email the shop every day to complain.
“I have been in touch with environmental health and local councillors, but it is still going on.
“Delivery lorries are coming in at 5am or 6am, banging about with the crates of supplies and leaving engines running.
“I have been told that, by law, the shop should not be allowed deliveries before 7am and after 10pm, but every day last week I was woken by trucks.
“At that time, when it is so quiet, any noise just travels and it wakens me and my husband.
“My husband gets up to go to work all day and he is just exhausted by the end of the day because he is up so early.”
The irritated 46-year-old, who suffers from Fibromyalgia, a musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder, said the uninvited early wake-up calls are starting to affect her health.
“I have spoken to the shop directly and they told me it would stop but it hasn’t,” Arlene continued.
“It is starting to play on my health because I have to go back to bed in the middle of the day because I am always so tired.
“Fibromyalgia makes it difficult enough to get to sleep without this.”
Arlene said she realises the store has to get products delivered but cannot understand why they have to get them so early, without considering the neighbouring households.
She added, “I don’t mind deliveries at 7am, that is completely acceptable because most people are getting up to go to work then anyway.
“I understand the shop needs to get deliveries, but they should be at fairer times.
“This is even happening at the weekend, so we can’t even get a lie in then.
“My neighbours have said they can’t sleep because of it either.”
A Tesco spokesperson said an enforced curfew across all their stores should mean no deliveries are received before 7am.
“We take our responsibilities as a good neighbour very seriously,” he said. “The store does operate a curfew.
“As a further measure, we have also written to our suppliers to remind them of this and request that if their vehicles do arrive at the store before this time, drivers should turn off their engines.”
Councillor Tom Ferguson said he would be contacting Tesco to discuss the situation further.
“I have not been aware of this before and nobody had complained to me personally but I will be on to it right away.
“If they say they have a curfew they need to adhere to it.
“One of the reasons these big supermarkets get through planning permission is that these technical details, like safety or noise, are dealt with and rules should be adhered to.
“I will be getting in touch with Tesco as soon as possible and I will also follow up any complaints made to the environmental health department.” |
