Angus chicken firm to shed 95 jobs
An Angus food firm is to axe 95 jobs — 40% of its workforce.
The redundancies at the Letham chicken processing plant of the 2 Sisters Food Group are claimed to be largely the result of a downturn in the UK market for cut and portioned chicken.

Company spokesman Peter King said that after a review of the group’s UK operation it had been decided to close the cutting division at Letham and centralise that part of the business in the West Midlands.

“This will optimise efficiency across the group and allow Letham to focus on primary production,” he said.

“It is not a reflection on the skill or dedication of the Letham workforce. The downturn in the economy and changes in consumer demand have rendered the cutting division at Letham uneconomical.”

The Letham factory has a largely migrant workforce of 240, processing 230,000 chickens a week.

The company will hold one-to-one discussions with the affected employees.

Letham will continue to be involved in the slaughter and processing of chickens.
