Alternative way to raise cash for charity

An unusual fundraiser staged by a Dundee vet has raised over £200 for the muscular dystrophy charity Action Duchenne.
Claire Mitchelson’s family was dealt a “devastating” blow in November when her four-year-old nephew Logan was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy — a genetic muscle wasting disease which usually leaves sufferers unable to walk by the age of 11.

The news prompted Claire to offer free animal acupuncture to eight clients at the Kings Cross Road- based Parkside Veterinary Group.

The alternative therapy, which practitioners like Claire argue is highly effective in treating muscular problems in animals, normally costs £55 a session, but owners instead made donations to Action Duchenne.

Claire said, “I only aimed to make about £100, but the customers have been great. One lady had to cancel her appointment, but she still came in and made a generous donation.

“It’s a very difficult diagnosis to deal with and we’re just trying to think positive. We all want to feel like we’re doing something to help.

“We chose to raise money for Action Duchenne because they’re progressive.

“Their main focus is looking for new ways to treat DMD and possibly finding a cure. Obviously, we’re doing this for Logan, but if other children benefit from money we raise then that’s great, too.”
