Ray of light amid Dundee gloom
A £3 million investment programme that has already created 330 jobs in the Dundee area is set to continue in the face of the recession (writes Sean Hamilton).
Michelin Development’s business loans fund recently passed the £3 million mark with a £32,000 award to Arbroath-based oil industry company, Brumac Engineering Services Ltd.

They are the 25th local company to benefit from the scheme, which aims to support small and medium sized businesses that can create new employment around the country.

Dundee’s jobs market has been rocked by a series of losses in recent years, most recently at NCR, where production was shut down last week.

Providing a ray of light among the doom and gloom, however, the Michelin fund’s business development manager for Dundee, David Thomson, said plans are already in place to ensure more cash is handed out to create much-needed jobs in the city.

“We are very pleased to see the fund go past the £3 million mark, but, more importantly, we are extremely happy to have supported the creation of so many local jobs,” he said.

“By helping forward thinking, progressive companies, Michelin Development can play its part in injecting a vibrancy and sustainability to the regional economy, which in turn will help create a climate in which other enterprises can flourish.”

Over the next year, the fund is looking to loan a further £1 million to companies around the country, and Mr Thomson urged Dundee firms to get in on the act.

“We’re dealing with applications from several Dundee companies at the moment, but we’re always keen to hear from more,” he said.

“We’re quite diverse in the sectors we support, so I’d urge anyone to get in touch if they think they could provide jobs in the local area.”
