| Graduating time-based art and digital film student Ailsa Lawson unleashed a grizzly pair of zombies on unsuspecting visitors to the exhibition, held in the Vision building.
The duo are the stars of her film, Dee of the Dead, a two-minute piece which showcases her gruesome make-up effects, echoing the efforts of 70s horror films like Dawn of the Dead.
The student, from Port Seaton, is on a campaign to prove practical make-up effects can be just as effective as computer-generated imagery.
She said, “This is a craft that is being squeezed by technology, but it offers so much more.”
Trying to keep her effects as realistic as possible, Ailsa obtained a bucket of ox blood from an abattoir to pump down a funnel, so it could explode out of a character’s chest.
Far from being squeamish, she said, “I am the only person I’ve ever known of who has gone to an abattoir and been utterly delighted to leave with a bucket of ox blood and entrails.
Ailsa’s blood-curdling creation is just one of 260 on show at the exhibition, which runs until June 6, and showcases the efforts of graduating students from the fine art, design, textiles, jewellery, animation and digital imaging disciplines. |
