| This brings the number tested for the virus throughout the area to 13 — although as yet no cases of the H1N1 virus have been discovered.
The newest “possible” case contacted NHS Tayside over the weekend. But a spokesperson for the authority said today no further details were as yet available.
Two possible cases of swine flu are also being investigated in Fife.
But the health authority confirmed a local woman thought to have contracted the illness has been given the all clear.
The woman, who recently returned from Las Vegas, has tested positive for Type A flu, but it is not the H1N1 strain associated with swine flu.
There are currently four confirmed swine flu cases in Scotland, with a further one probable and 23 possible.
Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has stressed there is only one proven case of person-to-person transmission in Scotland.
“Obviously, though, we remain vigilant,” she said, adding there was “emerging evidence” the disease may be proving to be mild.
Meanwhile, NHS Tayside has activated its local pandemic influenza plans.
The Tayside Strategic Co-ordinating Group, which includes local authorities, police, Fire and Rescue and Scottish Ambulance Service, has met regularly.
Senior managers and clinicians are continuing to monitor the situation and discuss plans for dealing with any change.
Dr Drew Walker, director of public health, said, “I would stress the risk to the wider public remains very low.
“Anyone who develops flu-like symptoms or who has recently returned from one of the affected areas and is worried about their health should contact NHS 24 (08454 242424) or telephone their own GP for further advice.”
Information detailing the best ways to fight the bug has been added to Perth and Kinross Council’s website at www.pkc.gov.uk/influenza
Advice on how schools and businesses should react in the event of a local outbreak is also featured.
Locals are being made aware of the new section on the website via an email from the head of shared support services, Alan Nairn. He has sent it to organisations and hopes it will be passed on through local workplaces.
DUNDEE COUPLE’S HONEYMOON WAIT
A Dundee couple are facing a honeymoon dilemma because of the continuing swine flu epidemic in Mexico (writes Kirsten Johnson).
Audrey Heffren and David Robson, from Craigie, who tie the knot on May 23, are waiting to hear if they will have to cancel their dream holiday.
The couple were expecting to jet off to the Riviera Maya resort in Cancun, in Mexico, on May 25. But Following official Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice, their holiday company Thomas Cook has cancelled all trips to Cancun up to and including May 14.
The company is offering customers booked to travel to the location between May 15 and 22 the chance to change their destination free of charge. However, normal booking conditions still apply to all holidays after that date.
David said he and Audrey were scared they would not be able to find another comparable location at “such short notice”. The all-inclusive holiday was booked online with Thomas Cook Direct so David cannot even visit his local Thomas Cook branch for further details.
“It’s less than three weeks until we are meant to be leaving and with all the wedding plans it’s getting very stressful,” said David.
“Thomas Cook are advising customers to monitor their website updates but at the moment they only give advice to people who have booked up for holidays before May 22, there is no advice for anyone else apart from to “be patient”.
“The situation in Mexico is a bit worrying but I’d still go if I could. It’s just flu as far as I’m concerned and you can get that here.
“If I wanted to change my trip I would be charged — I don’t want to have to pay any more money.”
A Thomas Cook spokeswoman said the company was monitoring the situation.
“It’s difficult as a lot of people still want to take their holidays to Mexico but we are going on FCO advice,” she said.
She asked Mr Robson to be “patient” and to understand the “difficulties facing travel agents”.
“We cannot do anything for the customer at the moment but hopefully a decision will be made as the week progresses. I would urge him to keep in contact with Thomas Cook on 0870 607 5086 and to keep up to date with the Government travel advice. Hopefully, when this is updated to cover the date of his holiday we can let him know his options.” |
