The dinner — a sell-out — goes ahead at the Invercarse Hotel.
“I’ve looked out an old photo of NCR first and second teams (see foot of column) of the late 1970s,” said Tommy.
“Both teams were quite successful at that time.
“Some of the Scottish Amateur Cup winners were still active within the club at that time such as Alex Balmer, Joe Ogilvie, Harry Fleming and Tommy McLaren, in addition to a lot of other ‘weel-kent’ faces.”
However, in the passage of time, Tommy can’t quite remember all the names and hoped BwB readers will fill in the gaps.
I noticed my former Auchterhouse team-mate MARTIN LINDSAY in the photo and sent it on to him.
Martin was able to fill in most of the gaps, and now just a couple remain unidentified.
Top row — Mike Quinn, Bruce Ransford, Bobby Anderson, Martin Lindsay, Jimmy Cooper, Bob Shepherd, Willie Ashwood, Peter Keir and Jim Cairns.
Middle — Alex Balmer, Unknown, Alan Blyth, Ian Ogilvie, Tam Anderson, Davie Miller, John (surname unknown), Davie Duff, Derek Golden, Billy McGill, Davie Gow and Andy Conway.
Front — Sandy Mackie, Davie Arnott, Billy Piggot, Tommy Allan, Eddie Dougan, Tommy McLaren, Harry Fleming, Joe Ogilvie, Tom Szpak, Albert Kidd and Bob Griffin.
TOM ALSO RECALLS HIS TIME WITH NCR
In his latest offering, Manchester reader TOM McGOVERN recalls his time with NCR.
“The Cash was probably the best amateur football team I have seen,” he opened.
“I joined them in 1957 after four years in the RAF.
“Until 1969, I cannot remember many defeats.
“They dominated the Midlands Amateur FC before eventually winning the Scottish Amateur Cup at Hampden Park.
“That victory remains a poignant memory and I thank all players and officials who are still alive and well.
“I would love to hear from any of them and can be contacted on 0161 881 3062.
“My dad used to play for the ST STEPHEN’S team.
“It would be great to see a photograph of them.”
Speakers on Sunday are former Scottish international goalkeeper Alan Rough, John McKelvie and Eric Davidson, with SAFA officials Hugh Knapp and Angus Mackay also invited guests.
WIN A COPY OF “THE RISE OF THE TERRORS”
Dundee United historian Steve Gracie has completed his second book, “THE RISE OF THE TERRORS” and it is now in the bookshops.
It’s the second of three phases of Dundee United’s history, and covers the period from 1945 to 1979.
In the late 1940s, success looked a long way off for the club and the 1950s witnessed some difficult times for the Tannadice outfit.
However, events towards the end of the decade turned the fortunes of the club around.
The achievements of the 1960s brought First Division stability and the foundations laid by the directors and manager Jerry Kerr were further improved by the arrival of Jim McLean in the 1970s.
McLean took the club to another level, allowing the fans to witness their first Scottish Cup Final and regular European football.
As well as an in-depth review of each season, the book contains detailed profiles of all the players who made their debuts during this period.
Steve has devoted thousands of hours researching these books — and the result is work that gives the reader an invaluable reference source.
BwB has five of the books to give away.
All you have to do is phone 09018 020 020. When prompted, leave your name (spelling out your surname), address (including your postcode) and telephone number.
The successful five will be chosen after the closing date of noon on Monday, and calls should cost no more than 10p.
