Robertson boost for Tangerines
Dundee United are set to be handed a post-split fitness boost after Scotland midfielder Scott Robertson returned to normal training with the first-team squad at Tannadice today (writes Tom Duthie).
Ex-Dundee man Robertson was enjoying a sensational first season in the SPL, culminating in his first international appearance when Argentina visited Hampden in November, until a pelvic problem sidelined him.

That was in mid-January and, as well as not playing again since, it was feared the 24-year-old’s season could be over.

An operation in Leicester earlier this month, however, seems to have done the trick and, in the three weeks since, he has been making rapid progress.

“It’s still a case of seeing how things go, but he is coming on and getting him back training with the rest of the squad is a step in the right direction,” said boss Craig Levein.

And, while a couple of previous setbacks prior to the surgery means United will remain cautious, the chances of Robertson being back to aid the push for third place are looking good.

While Saturday’s visit to face Hibs at Easter Road will come too soon for him, he could feature later next month.

The fallout from the SPL fixture shambles, meanwhile, continues and it appears both Paul Dixon and Craig Conway have missed out on international recognition because they’ll be on duty against Aberdeen tomorrow week.

That game had to be re-arranged after the SPL failed to notice its original May 9 date clashed with Dundee’s final SFL fixture against promotion-chasing Partick Thistle.

As it now falls just 24 hours after Scotland’s ‘B’ friendly against Northern Ireland at Broadwood, no players from United or Aberdeen can be included in George Burley’s squad.

And it’s understood had this clash not occurred, both full-back Dixon and wide man Conway would have been involved.

“George Burley has not spoken to me about this game, so I can’t say either of them would have been involved, but what I would say is they are both playing well enough to have been included,” added Craig.

McMenamin deserved deal
His signing a new contract at the weekend was lost among preparations for the clash with St Johnstone, but Dundee boss Jocky Scott today expressed satisfaction at securing the services of Colin McMenamin for another two years (writes Tom Duthie).

The 28-year-old was fixed up from doomed Gretna last season and, although this term his appearances have been curtailed by injury, he has done enough to persuade his gaffer he has an important role to play in the bid to get back to the SPL.

Jocky, though, has warned that, even at 28, McMenamin will still be expected to work on improving his game.

“Since he came back from injury, he’s shown me that, in terms of appetite to work hard both in training and games, he is worth his new deal,” said Jocky.

“He is also one, who, I believe, has the attitude and ability to play at SPL level when we get back there.

“There are, though, still areas of his play as a striker that can be improved and there are things about movement we will be working on over the summer and in the early part of next season.

“There is a role for him here and what I do see in him is a player who can get goals for himself and others.”

It has been confirmed the red card McMenamin’s strike partner Mikael Antoine-Curier needlessly picked up at the weekend has ended his season early and will delay the start of next.

The Frenchman will miss Saturday’s visit to Clyde because of automatic suspension and will then start a further two-game ban that takes in the final league game against Partick on Saturday week and the first league match of next term.

McInnes’ call
St Johnstone team boss Derek McInnes was delighted with the backing his side received from their travelling support in the 1-0 win against Dundee at Dens — now he’s looking for the fans to get behind Saints again when Morton call at McDiarmid Park on Saturday (writes James Masson).
Saints stand on the threshold of promotion to the SPL, and Derek said, “The supporters were magic against Dundee and I’m hoping they get right behind us from the start against Morton.

“We have a chance to finish the job on Saturday and I would ask the fans to keep believing we can achieve promotion.

“The players really appreciate the terrific backing they’ve been getting. It really does help the boys, so we’re looking for the fans to turn out and give it everything from the stands.”
