Letters - 27 April 2009
STATION UPGRADE MUST BE PRIORITY

WHILE ScotRail and Network Rail stall on upgrading Dundee’s railway station (pictured), the prospect of a Victoria and Albert museum outpost hovers on the horizon.

An independent survey estimates it could well attract visitors of over 400,000 per annum, making great demands on the city’s transport infrastructure.

A complete overhaul of Dundee Taybridge station is therefore a priority and needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

It is not a good advert for Dundee when people coming into the city by rail see this station.

The same should be said of the oft talked about transfer of the bus station from Seagate and the proposed replacement of Kingsway with a bypass to the north of the city. The major lack of progress on all three should be a serious cause for the city’s politicians and business people. — Politico.

Memorial to Brandon is vigilance
I write with reference to the letter from Fintryman regarding a memorial for Brandon Muir.

His assertion that a real memorial would be for us to be more vigilant is correct.

We do not need a reminder of the death of Brandon.

It ought to be etched on each and every one of our minds.

If people had taken their heads out of the sand and voiced their concerns, and there were many of them who did so after the tragedy, if each and every one of them who was concerned had spoken up, then perhaps he would still be here today, enjoying life and the world around him now in a loving, stable and safe environment.

I fear that the majority of people will carry on burying their heads in the sand, hoping someone else might do the right thing and an awful lot of people seem to be of the attitude ‘me and mine are okay’ so why bother? — Clear Conscience.

Circle approach causes delays
It’s time to do something about the shambles at the Scott Fyffe roundabout in Dundee.

Get in Lane signs are up in Douglas Road indicating left turn to Arbroath only, and ahead for all other traffic at the roundabout.

Are those responsible for this aware that “ahead” covers four exits from the roundabout (five if you count all the way round to Douglas Road), Strips of Craigie Road, Greendykes Road, Arbroath Road westbound, and Kingsway East.

This means that probably 95% of all traffic coming down Douglas Road will have to be in the right-hand lane approaching the roundabout, which splits into two lanes only about 20 yards from the roundabout.

The inevitable result is that huge traffic queues are forming with the accompanying delays and frustration for drivers.

The lines on the roundabout are many and confusing when accessing from the Kingsway. — Confused Balgilloite.

TRAFFIC QUEUES

I agree with letter writer Stuck In Traffic. Those responsible should have left the markings the way they were, in the Douglas Road circle, with the left lane being able to go either left to Arbroath Road or down Strips of Craigie.

I use this route every day and apart from when there has been road works I have never seen the traffic queues like this.

The majority of traffic has to use one lane for four exits leaving the left lane empty most of the time.

I now have to leave 10 minutes earlier to get to work on time. — Slow and Stop.

VERY FRUSTRATED

As a regular user and resident of Douglas Road, I am getting very frustrated at the new layout of the Scott Fyffe Circle.

Any traffic coming down here, heading in the Arbroath direction cuts into Huntly Place, thus avoiding the circle, which leaves the left-hand lane permanently empty and results in tailbacks up to and past the lights at Asda.

Please give us back the use of the redundant lane to Strips of Craigie Road again. — Common Sense.

REWRITE CODE

Has the way we enter a circle changed? I’ve been driving for many years and was taught to use the left-hand lane coming to a circle, if I was to exit on the first or second lane on the circle.

I’ve never before seen markings on any other circle like those at Douglas Road at the Scott Fyffe circle.

Is this to be the future of driving? if so then the Highway Code will have to be rewritten. — Careful Driver.

Acted on first information
Regarding the vandalised memorial in Caird Park, Dundee, I advise for the record that I am still Leader of the Labour Group on Dundee City Council.

There was an outcry after it emerged the memorial, to Black Watch soldiers who died in the first world war, has been covered in graffiti and damaged.

I give H. W. and all the readers of the Evening Telegraph my assurance that I acted on the first request and notification from my constituent, as is the duty of any councillor. — Kevin Keenan, Leader of the Labour Group Dundee City Council.

Want to sit at concerts
Letter writer Ruby and people like her is one of the reasons I have stopped attending events in the Caird Hall, because while she may want to spend £35 to enjoy dancing along, I, and a lot of people like me, pay our admission price to actually see the artist who’s playing and not the wiggling backside of the person in front.

As there appears to be a growing number of people who find it impossible to sit down, perhaps the Caird Hall management should consider removing some of the seats to create a standing/dancing area separate from the rest of us, who actually want to sit and see the artist in concert. — H. Barrie.

Bingo night
Brooksbank Centre and Services monthly prize bingo will be held on Wednesday, May 13, at its premises in Pitairlie Road, Mid Craigie. Doors open at 6.15pm, eyes down 7pm. Admission 50p. — Cara Coventry, Community Works Assistant.
