| The man, who was suffering from the effects of inhaling smoke, had already been moved from the flat before fire crews arrived, thanks to two men who were working nearby.
Emergency services provided medical attention before the man was taken to Ninewells Hospital. The blaze, which broke out in the living room, caused substantial damage to the ground-floor flat.
Tayside Fire and Rescue crew manager John Milligan said, “An elderly man was taken to Ninewells.
He was removed before our arrival by a couple of workmen who were working nearby.”
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose real to extinguish the blaze before ventilating the rest of the building.
Other residents in the block were contacted by fire crews to ensure everyone was accounted for.
A smoke alarm alerted the man to the blaze and Mr Milligan said it was vital for homeowners to install the correct equipment.
“This incident highlights the necessity to have a working smoke alarm in your home,” he said. |
