Championship cheers

Lord Provost Letford gets in on the act.

A Dundee-based cheerleading troupe put the final touches to their energetic routine today before jetting off to the World Championship in Florida.
Team Scotland Allstars, made up of 22 girls from across the country, will represent Scotland alongside 60 other nations taking part in the competition in Disneyworld, Orlando.

The under-14 team, half of whom are from Dundee, will leave in the early hours of tomorrow morning ahead of the championships this weekend.

Iain Bryson, a piper from Mains of Fintry Pipe Band, who found fame at the Beijing Olympics, will join the team at the contest.

The troupe has employed a professional choreographer from America to co-ordinate their routine and their coach, Jo Walls, has been selected to judge at the event.

Dundee Lord Provost John Letford joined the group at the city square today to wish them luck.

Steven Walls, founder of cheerleading organisation Scotcheer and an organiser of the trip, said he was extremely proud of all the hard work the girls have put in.

He said. “They have worked hard, cheerleading is basically a mix of gymnastics and weightlifting so the girls have to be super-fit to do this.”
