Couple wed for 70 years

A Dundee couple celebrated their 70th year as husband and wife today at their home in Kirkton (writes Kirsten Johnson).
James and Catherine Pittendreich (pictured), who are both 92, were married on this day in 1939, only months before the outbreak of the second world war.

The couple spent their platinum milestone day today with family and friends.

James was born and brought up in St Cyrus, Kincardineshire, while Catherine spent her childhood in Arbroath.

The couple met in their late teens at Sunnyside Hospital in Montrose, where they were both training to be nurses.

They were married a few years later in Arbroath and went on to have two daughters, Nancy and Elsie.

James and his wife gave up their nursing careers when they married, but in their later years returned to the profession, in Balgowan School for Boys and Dundee’s Royal Victoria Hospital respectively.

James worked on the land during the war and both he and Catherine remained keen gardeners into their later years.

They moved to Dundee in their late 40s and became well-known members of the Kirkton community. The couple have seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
