Fans rally to help family
Football fans around Scotland have been rallying round to help pay the cost of returning the body of Dundee man Kevin Murray to his home city (writes Bruce Robbins).
More than £1400 has already been pledged towards the repatriation.

Dundee FC supporters organisation Dee4Life has already promised £500 and that was matched today by Dark Blues supporters and customers at The Planet bar, who said they wanted to help the family of a man who was a regular at the South Road pub.

The Black Watch Association also revealed a Tartan Army supporters club in Cumbernauld has said it will give £300 towards the estimated £5000 cost of bringing the former Black Watch soldier’s body home from Amsterdam.

A Fife football fan has also promised the association £100 and further donations of £30 have been promised.

Kevin’s body was found in his hotel room in Amsterdam on the morning of the Holland v Scotland World Cup qualifying match on March 28. Kevin had gone to the Dutch capital with a dozen friends to watch the game.

His family are struggling to meet the cost of returning his body and have appealed for help. Major Ronnie Proctor, of The Black Watch Association, said its welfare committee had met and agreed to make a standard grant towards the cost of the funeral.

Mr Proctor said he hoped more cash would be forthcoming from two supporting bodies of the association.

He said, “I think it’s great the Tartan army and other football fans have responded in this fashion.

“Members of the public have also been in touch with us and I’d urge anyone who wants to make a donation to send it to The Black Watch Association at Balhousie Castle in Perth.”

Major Proctor said the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association had already spoken to Kevin’s mum, Lorraine, with a view to co-ordinating the repatriation fund.

Dee4Life member Robin Grimmond said he was contacted by Dundee supporters at The Planet, who told him they hoped to have £500 to donate by the end of the week.

“That’s a great gesture by the Dark Blues club at the pub but I’d also like to stress other regulars who support other clubs will be donating as well.”
