United Feeney alert
Dundee United boss Craig Levein was today on the lookout of a pair of ear plugs in advance of Northern Ireland goal hero Warren Feeney’s return to Tannadice this evening (writes Tom Duthie).
Feeney grabbed one of his country’s goals in the 3-2 win over Poland on Saturday and cemented their position at the top of their World Cup qualifying group with the only goal against Slovenia last night.

And his club boss knows everyone at United will hear all about it when he gets back.

“Feeney is the loudest man in the world at the best of times, now he is going to be insufferable,” groaned Craig.

“It’s going to be a tough few days because we are going to hear about his goals — a few times.”

Of course, Craig was delighted to see the on-loan Cardiff striker continue his good club form and equally pleased of what he saw of David Goodwillie and Paul Caddis as they starred for the Scotland Under-21s in a 5-2 win over Albania.

“It’s great to see Dundee United players away and doing well. ‘Goodie’ got a goal and has now had two competitive games that he needed, and Caddis looked very good yesterday.

“The only down side for me is whether I can go with three outfield players who will be playing their third game in a week if I start them against Hibs on Saturday.”

With Arsenal’s Lukasz Fabianski recovering from food poisoning that had laid him low at the weekend, keeper Lukasz Zaluska did not get his first Polish cap in the 10-0 thrashing of San Marino.

Efrem injury blow
Dundee continued to pay the price of international recognition today when it emerged Cyprus winger Giorgos Efrem is an injury doubt for Saturday’s trip to Morton (writes Tom Duthie).
The Dark Blues were forced to play their last two First Division fixtures without Efrem and fellow-loan Ranger Andrew Shinnie because they were away with national squads.

Now it has emerged a hamstring injury, that happened before Cyprus lost 2-0 to Bulgaria in Sofia last night, has put Efrem’s weekend participation in question.

“I spoke to him briefly and I know he has a hamstring problem. I don’t know if he did it in their game last weekend or if it was in training, but he was not involved last night and he has to be a doubt,” said boss Jocky Scott.

“It’s the price you can pay when players are away with their countries, but I have to say that, the way our last two games have worked out, I can’t put the results down to Shinnie and Efrem’s absence.

“We actually coped with that well and it was other reasons that cost us.”

There was more bad news today when it was confirmed Craig McKeown’s season is over and he will have a groin operation tomorrow.

“It is not quite reached the stage where it’s a hernia, but he is going in to have a repair done that will prevent one developing,” explained Jocky.

“It’s not the best news and he won’t be back in time for any of our remaining games.”

On the plus side, last Saturday’s red-carded pair Gary MacKenzie and Paul McHale will be available at Cappielow, though, after that, McHale will then serve a further two-game ban.

Peter struggling
St Johnstone’s Peter MacDonald is unlikely to make Saturday’s vital home game against Partick Thistle (writes James Masson).
He is struggling to recover from a hamstring injury, although the striker may be fit enough to be considered for Tuesday night’s home fixture against Dunfermline.

Kevin James and Steven Kinniburgh join the squad for the Patrick game.
