On two occasions on the same day, I saw three unrelated children aged between five and eight being aggressively sworn at, with language that is absolutely disgusting.
Nothing unusual these days you might think, but it was the parents or carers of these very children who were subjecting them to these terrible torrents of verbal abuse.
As we all hear far too often, verbal and mental abuse sometimes leads to physical abuse. Certainly the aggressive manner in which the words were said to the children is a cause for concern.
It is a very sad situation and I fear that, before long, we will have another case of a child found injured, covered in bruises or cowering in a corner because he or she is frightened of his or her parents.
I hope those parents read this, and then next time they verbally abuse their child they stop and think. — Concerned and Watching.
Constant queues
Dundee’s General Post Office in Ward Road.
I am appalled at the lack of service provided by Dundee’s General Post Office in Ward Road.
As a regular customer, there are constant queues that lead out into the street.
Just the other day, I joined a queue from the street and to my astonishment there were only two staff attending customers. This is not something that is rare, but happens almost every day.
There are 10 booths to provide service, but only two or three staff on at any given time.
Why on Earth can’t the Post Office organise more staff to attend to the customers that have to wait in queues for more than 20 minutes? — Disgruntled, Monifieth.
Is paying smokers to stop worth it?
I am disgusted that the Government and the NHS believe the best way to get smokers in Tayside to quit is by paying them off.
Imagine the joy a smoker must feel at qualifying for this.
I smoked for six years and would have been delighted at being told I could stop, save money, and actually earn vouchers for doing this.
Can we really say that in this current economic climate this is money well spent?
The reason the Government taxes cigarettes so heavily is because it knows that smokers will continue to pay through the nose for the pleasure despite the cost.
We should not see our money spent on paying these people to give up smoking. That money can be better spent elsewhere.
The feeling of knowing you have freed yourself from smoking is the biggest incentive you need. — Happy Ex-Smoker.
No bottomless pit
No matter how much smokers contribute in tax, it will not mean the NHS can find any more doctors or nurses.
There is no bottomless pit of talent which can be conjured up, otherwise we could all become what we wanted to be merely by buying our degrees. This leads to increases in waiting times for treatments for us all. — John Montgomery, March Crescent, Cellardyke.
Needles everywhere
As a member of Charleston Healthy Action Troopers and as a worried mum, I ask drug users in Charleston to properly dispose their needles.
The grass opposite South Road is full of them.
I’m very concerned as I have three young children who play there every night. — Nicola Hutton.
Teacher sacked
I read of a teacher in England who has been found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.
She was secretly filming the thugs who were running amok for a TV documentary.
She was sacked for filming them without their permission.
The rights of the aggressors and abusers are always upheld.
What about the rights of the teachers who put up with this? — Concerned Observer.
Left scene after colliding with car
While walking past the car park behind Lochee High Street and next to the old toilets, I heard a loud crashing sound. I turned to see a lady trying to park her car, which had made contact with another parked vehicle.
After first inspecting her car for damage, she checked the other car then moved her own to an adjacent car park directly behind the old Kwik Save without leaving her details.
Unfortunately, as I had an appointment to keep, I had to leave the scene, but when I returned I managed to get the registration number of the guilty driver’s car.
If anyone found damage to his or her car parked in this car park on Friday at around 2pm then do contact the police.
It is so sad that someone can’t take responsibility for her own mistakes. It is what you pay insurance for after all. — Observer.
Voted against principals
John Letford’s complaint is the Labour Party shut out the SNP.
At the council meeting, the respected Councillor Ian Borthwick suggested that all parties run the council. That would avoid Labour or SNP being shut out. Good for Mr Borthwick.
So did Mr Letford support it? No — he backed a total SNP council, which flies in the face of what he said. — Lochee and Angry.
No credibility left
John Letford said he wanted no-one cut out of running the council, but he voted for exactly that on Monday. He shut out Labour and Liberal for the SNP only. This man has no credibility left and he should go. — Gina Forbes.
How can he do it?
How can John Letford, a proud Socialist, support the SNP?
If he had walked away from Labour because of political differences, then that could have been accepted as an act of principle, but he has agreed to work in an SNP administration. — B. Adamson, Dundee.
Not surprised
I wasn’t surprised to see the reaction to Councillor Letford’s decision to resign from the council administration.
Rather than a gesture designed to help the city during troubled times, Councillor Letford looks to have thrown his lot in with the SNP in order to keep hold of all that goes with being Lord Provost. — D. R. Crawford, Dundee.
Cock-a-hoop
Dundee SNP councillors must be cock-a- hoop at having persuaded John Letford to leave Labour.
The sad thing is that Mr Letford has acted as a great ambassador for Dundee over the years.
If he is to retain his credibility, he must step down as member for Lochee and as Lord Provost with immediate effect. — J. Brown.
Lochee deserves better
I can’t believe Lochee folk have backed John Letford through thick and thin only to get treated like this.
The people of Lochee who voted him in deserve better than this. John Letford should resign.
If he wants to stand again as a councillor in Dundee he should put his name forward as an independent candidate. — J. W. Colville, Dundee.
Political opportunism at its worst
I am gobsmacked by John Letford’s betrayal of the Labour Party.
On one hand he claims to have been unhappy with things for a while, but was only prepared to jump ship when his position as Lord Provost was in jeopardy.
This is political opportunism at its very worst. — Paul Coutts.
Trust needed
How can John Letford continue as a Dundee councillor after what has happened? People must be able to trust the people they vote for. — Adam C.
