Paton flags up title bid
Nothing is being conceded, and a lengthy list of absentees will not be offered up as an excuse, as Dundee try to boost flagging promotion hopes by winning at Dunfermline tonight (writes Tom Duthie).
That’s the promise from defender Eric Paton, the man who will be wearing the captain’s armband for the Dark Blues. Saturday’s late equaliser for Ross County was a major blow to hopes of catching First Division leaders St Johnstone, but Paton believes that, even with just seven games to go, an eight-point gap can be closed.

And, while six regulars are set to be missing against the Pars, he feels a second win of the season at East End Park is on the cards.

“Losing a goal right at the end like we did on Saturday was very disappointing and a blow to our chances, but nothing is settled yet,” he said.

“Anyone who watches the First Division knows that everything can change within the space of just a couple of games, so, with seven left, a lot can still happen. We are certainly not giving up and, as long as it is mathematically possible for us to go up, we will be fighting to do it.”

Tonight, Paton will be turning out despite taking a leg knock at the weekend, while missing are Paul McHale, Gary MacKenzie, Craig McKeown, David Cowan, Giorgos Efrem and Andrew Shinnie.

Colin McMenamin is now expected to recover from a blow to the head and take his usual place, and, whatever the line-up, the skipper feels there are enough resources to take three points.

“At the weekend, Mark Gilhaney and David O’Brien came in and did a good job, despite not playing for a few weeks, and there are others who will come in at Dunfermline,” he added.

“We have enough quality here to get a result and we will take confidence from winning there just after the gaffer took over. It was 1-0 that day, but it might have been more comfortable if we had taken our chances and, if we play the same, we can win again.”

With Jim Lauchlan the only experienced centre-back available, teenager Kyle Benedictus is set to return to the starting XI. at the ground where he played a starring role back in November.

Once again, for boss Jocky Scott, tonight will be all about getting a result.

He said, “Saturday was a blow to us, a big one, but nothing has changed and what we need are victories between now and the end of the season. It’s important we keep going and try to catch St Johnstone and, even if that does not happen, we have to aim to get above Partick Thistle and into second.”

After five defeats in six league games, the home side need points to stay above the relegation zone, though, in a tight league, a win tonight and in their other game in hand against St Johnstone could see them as high as third by next midweek.

They will be without injured quartet Simon Wiles, Andy Kirk, Graeme Holmes and Kevin Harper. Greg Shields may return.

Gomis may sit weekend out
Morgaro Gomis’ first taste of international football could see a change in the Dundee United midfield when Hibs visit Tannadice on Saturday (writes Tom Duthie).
After considerable searching yesterday, the Tangerines backroom staff were able to confirm the 24-year-old made his debut for Senegal in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Oman on Saturday.

And, while only reports of the game will confirm a second cap, word is Gomis will play again when the Africans face Iran in Tehran tomorrow. Delighted as he is for his midfield stalwart, if that’s the case Craig suspects getting 90 minutes out of him this weekend will be a big ask.

“Of the players who are away, Morgaro is facing the most travel and the fact this is his first taste of international football means it is all new to him,” he said.

“It’s not so much a physical thing as mental, and it takes players time to adjust to going away with their country and then coming straight back into their club side. He is not due back with us until Friday and we’ll see how he is, but it’s already in my head that I might have to leave him out.”

If Gomis is rested, fans’ favourite Danny Swanson will be his most likely replacement. He is back to full fitness after twisting a knee a few weeks ago and came through another 90 minutes in the reserve win over Motherwell yesterday.

“Danny’s been fit enough to start for a couple of weeks now and I know he is eager to get back in.

“He’s come on in a couple of games and impressed, so he would be in my thoughts for a starting place whatever the situation of others.”

Lukasz Zaluska could win his first full cap for Poland when they face San Marino tomorrow night after coach Leo Beenhakker confirmed Artur Boruc has left the squad and returned to Glasgow.

Saints back racism campaign
St Johnstone players took time off from preparing for Saturday’s crucial home game against Partick Thistle by supporting a Show Racism The Red Card initiative at McDiarmid Park attended by pupils from Letham and Our Lady’s primary schools (writes James Masson).
Show Racism The Red Card’s Tommy Breslin said, “We have worked successfully with St Johnstone and are delighted to get this further opportunity to promote our message.

“We showed the children our latest DVD which features Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba, Craig Levein, Barry Ferguson and Stephen McManus, and encouraged them to treat people of all colours and creeds with respect. There was also a question and answer and autograph signing session with St Johnstone players.”

Meanwhile, Saints boss Derek McInnes was still trying to strengthen his squad ahead of today’s signing deadline
