‘Will not be used as pawn’

Councillor Liz Fordyce

SNP councillor Liz Fordyce today said she would not be used as a “pawn” in the Labour group’s manoeuvrings on Dundee City Council.
The group announced today that they intend to nominate Councillor Fordyce as Depute Lord Provost in their new proposed administration, with independent councillor Ian Borthwick as the Lord Provost.

But Councillor Fordyce told the Tele the move was a “foolish” last-ditch attempt to hold on to power — which wouldn’t work.

“I think it is rather foolish to use me as a pawn in any game they are trying to play,” she said.

“I have been told they are proposing me for Depute Lord Provost with Ian Borthwick as Lord Provost.

“That won’t happen.

“I have been a member of the Scottish National Party since 1965, so I have been around politics too long to fall for some kind of political game from the Labour group. It’s a bit absurd really.”

But Mrs Fordyce — who is currently the SNP group’s spokeswoman on education — said this was not a reflection on the role of Lord Provost.

“If our group had an overall majority and I was asked to be Lord Provost I would be delighted, as I think it is a very privileged position to be in in this city,” she said.

“But at this moment I am the education spokesperson, and my biggest ambition is to make the education department work.

“I want to help all the children in the city achieve their full potential. That is my ambition, and I am not interested in any political games.”
