SNP take Maryfield

Craig Melville

The SNP’s Craig Melville this afternoon won the Maryfield by-election in Dundee (writes Graeme Strachan).

This left the Labour-run city council’s administration tied at 14 seats each with the SNP. The other seat is held by Independent Ian Borthwick.

There was a turn out of 29.39% with 3290 voting.

Six candidates contested the by-election although there were seven names on the ballot paper as Independent Dave Young withdrew, but it was too late to remove his name.

Polling was under the Single Transferable Vote system of proportional representation.

Mr Young went out first, followed by fellow Independent candidate Grant Simmons, then the SSP’s Angela Gorrie, then Colin Stewart of the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrat’s candidate Chris Hall.

Eventually, Mr Melville was elected ahead of Labour’s George McIrvine. He had 1550 votes over 500 ahead of Labour.

The vote was forced by the resignation of Labour councillor Joe Morrow who had cited outside work commitments as the reason behind his decision.
