| Taylor Group Diecastings Ltd, of St Mary’s Road, a supplier to NCR in Dundee, told the Tele the operation would shut in June with the loss of eight jobs.
Director Richard Taylor said the company’s failure was a source of extreme regret as his family had been associated with the firm, in its various guises, since his grandfather started a foundry three generations ago.
He said the firm had decided to pull the plug last week because of extremely difficult trading conditions and they wanted to ensure there was enough cash left in the pot to pay staff their severance and also make good any debts to creditors.
Mr Taylor paid tribute to the workforce, saying many of the employees had worked with Taylor’s for years and it was largely down to their hard work the company had survived as long as it had.
He said, “We decided that following the trading conditions over the last few years, and particularly since the recession kicked in, there was no longer a viable business here.
“What we wanted to do was go for an orderly closure where we still have enough money to pay for redundancies and suppliers and make sure we don’t leave other companies in the lurch.
“We issued redundancy notices to eight employees — six on the shop floor and two other members of staff. We are a high-pressure die-casting business producing zinc and aluminium castings for a variety of customers, including NCR and Tokheim.
“It is hugely sad, it is the end of an era. It is a family business that has come down three generations.”
The company will continue to fulfil orders — including, ironically, producing new stock for NCR in Dundee — until the factory closes for the final time in the summer. |
