| The move was announced earlier this year and will be implemented as the 90-day consultation process is going on to hammer out the fine detail of how the closure of the factory will be carried out, and the 252 jobs axed.
The plan to still go ahead with the production halt — said to have been necessary because of the downturn in demand for products — was confirmed by the company this afternoon.
Stunned employees from the Gourdie facility were sent home this morning after they were given the news their jobs are to disappear.
They have been told to return to work on Monday, when management will sit down with employee representatives and union officials to begin detailed consultations about the job cuts.
A spokesman for NCR told the Tele this afternoon the announcement made in Dundee today was “one of a series of cost cutting exercises” to be announced by the company globally.
Just when the Gourdie plant will be closed was not clear today, although it is expected to be as soon after the 90-day consultation period as the company can manage.
Asked today where the manufacturing that is to be lost to Dundee will take place when there is an upturn in the market, the spokesman said it would depend on where customers were.
Pressed as to whether one of the sites would be the company’s plant in Hungary, he added, “It could be at any of a number of sites, including Budapest, India or China.”
NCR owns the Gourdie site, which has been earmarked for a major redevelopment by Macdonald Estates.
The NCR spokesman said today talks would be taking place with the developers about what would happen to the factory site.
However, previously released proposals have shown a supermarket is being planned for where the NCR building has been sited for decades. |
