| Sophia Blair, known as Bunt, regularly walked from Tealing to Stobswell in her younger days and told the Tele she believes this is the reason for her long life.
“I used to walk from Tealing to Stobswell and back for work because there was no transport in those days,” she said. “The only form of transport I had was my legs.
“I think that must be one of the reasons I have lived so long. My father — William Cuthill — also lived to one month short of his 103rd birthday.”
The second eldest of five siblings, Mrs Blair was born in 1909 and, as her father was a ploughman on farms, spent a lot of her childhood living in various parts of Angus.
She attended Murroes School from the age of seven before moving on to the Lundie School.
Mrs Blair married Dundee man Walter in 1939 and the couple settled in the city’s Main Street having one daughter, Hilda, in 1942. Bunt has lived in Fintry now for many years.
The family now includes two grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a great great grandchild.
They plan to celebrate the special birthday with a family meal.
Hilda said, “She still has a very sharp memory. If any of us are ever trying to remember a phone number we just ask her.” |
