New plan for Lochee
Job creation and traffic management are among issues highlighted for action in the new local community plan for Lochee (writes Brian Allison, local government reporter).
All eight of the wards which make up Dundee City Council have had individual plans drawn up under a duty placed on local authorities by central government.

The area covered by the Lochee ward includes Lochee itself, Charleston, Menzieshill, Gowrie Park, Beechwood, Denhead of Gray, Pitalpin, Dryburgh, Whorterbank, Clement Park and Foggyley and contains a population of around 23,000.

The plan, which will run until 2011, was prepared following extensive consultation with local people and representative groups including 600 postal surveys, presentations to various community organisations and discussions with more than 150 young people.

Work and enterprise is one of the themes covered by the community plan, which states that new investment in the area will be encouraged to provide jobs.

An example cited is the multi-million pound project to create new business development units on the site of the old Valentines factory.

It is also intended to improve access to benefits and employment advice as a way of encouraging people back into work.

In terms of the environment, a facades enhancement scheme is to be implemented to improve the appearance of shops in the High Street and footpaths upgraded.

New community facilities are to be developed for health promotion in Menzieshill and Charleston; community forums established to support the involvement of residents in the regeneration programme for the Lochee area; and a new youth work project provided to work with young people who habitually hang around Lochee High Street.
