Profits up at Debenhams
Debenhams, which occupies the “anchor” store in Dundee’s Overgate, said profits for the 18 weeks to January 3 were up, margins were “flat” in comparison with 2007, like-for-like sales were down 3.5%, but stores were continuing to take business away from competitors.
Rob Templeman, the company’s chief executive, said stores had put in a “creditable” sales performance given the extremely difficult and volatile conditions across the high street.

He added, “More than ever, consumers are looking for high quality products at good value prices.

“Debenhams has supplied this during the important Christmas trading period through ongoing improvements to our designs and products made over the past 18 months, alongside tactical promotional activity.

“Looking forward, the trading environment is likely to remain challenging for the whole retail sector.

“We will continue to focus on bringing fashionable and stylish products to the consumer as well as managing the business with an emphasis on the tight control of costs, stocks and capital.”
