City centre’s nice surprise
Dundee’s city centre manager Lorna McKenzie did a round-up of retailers and, though she was unable to quote sales figures, the impression was that things picked up in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Restaurateurs, who had been anticipating a drop in business as people tightened their financial belts, were also pleasantly surprised to find that there were still plenty of customers determined to enjoy a festive night out.

National retailers, Lorna said, appeared to have done better than some independents, although there was no doubt that the situation was “tough” for some stores which had cut prices to boost turnover.

She said, “The city centre had a healthy footfall and there was a busy atmosphere. It was a mixed bag with some finding it very tough and others doing not too badly.

“I’d say it was no better and no worse than last year and we seem to be fairly stable compared to what they might be experiencing in England.”
