Shoppers help lift retail gloom
Despite economic recession, the credit crunch and the demise of some High Street names such as Woolworths, Dundee’s city centre retailers appear to have emerged from the festive shopping season with some reasons to be cheerful (writes Bruce Robbins).
Gloom and doom had been predicted for the retail sector, but Dundee again showed signs of bucking the national trend with “footfall” figures and business on a par with the same period in 2007 for many retailers.

Far from staying away, shoppers were attracted by the price-slashing strategies adopted by stores as they sought to stimulate interest in the buying public.

However, although visitor numbers were quite healthy given the current economic difficulties facing the country, it is understood that shoppers were not spending as much as they had done in previous years.
