Steak pies sell like hot cakes

The steak pie fast became an endangered species at Scott Bros butchers.

Hogmanay essentials were flying off the shelves of Dundee’s shops today as revellers prepared to see in the New Year with a hearty dram and a traditional steak pie (write Sean Hamilton and Kirsten Johnson).
The major supermarkets all reported runs on alcohol as drouthy Dundonians stocked-up ahead of the countdown to 2009, while at the city’s butchers, pies were selling like hot cakes as rosy-cheeked queues snaked their way into the bitter-cold streets.

The New Year’s Day steak pie is one of the last great traditions of the festive season and, according to one city butcher, the demand shows no sign of waning.

“It’s been unbelievably busy this year, we have sold hundreds,” said Scott Jarron, of Scott Bros butchers on Strathmartine Road.

“People have been queuing out of the door since yesterday and there were even people outside before we opened at 8 this morning to make sure they got one.

“Steak pie seems to be becoming more and more popular with people at New Year — we’ve actually sold more than this time last year.”

Gilbert Grossett, owner of Grossett’s on Arbroath Road, echoed Mr Jarron’s sentiments, saying, “Steak pie sales have been phenomenal this year, definitely up from last year.”

According to Mr Grossett, the appeal of the Ne’er Day steak pie lies in the tradition, as well as the taste.

“People never get fed up of a good steak pie,” he said. “It’s traditional hearty food and it warms you up in the cold weather.”
