The new Craigowl Primary School was officially opened in Dundee today by Depute Lord Provost Ian Borthwick (writes David Clegg).
Pupils of the school, which was built under the city council’s £90 million Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme, celebrated the occasion with a school song, school dance and a Christmas medley.

Mr Borthwick said, “It is a great honour to be carrying out this role on what is a special day for everyone connected with Craigowl Primary.

“I am very pleased to see the pride that pupils and staff feel for their school as they write the first chapter in the history of the new primary.”

Craigowl is the fourth school to have been officially opened under the PPP programme and was formed through the merger of Brackens and Macalpine primaries.

Education convener Councillor Laurie Bidwell said, “We are all delighted to see Craigowl Primary officially opened in what is a very special occasion for the school.

“Dundee City Council is committed to improving education and the PPP programme is part of our overall strategy to help even more pupils succeed at school.

“We are looking to meet the challenges of education in the 21st century with these new buildings.

“It is now over 30 years since the last brand-new schools in the city were opened, so this PPP programme really does mark the start of a new era for education in Dundee.”

Craigow is one of four new schools under the PPP scheme that are being officially opened before Christmas. Claypotts Castle, Downfield and St Andrews primaries have already enjoyed their celebrations.
