Let’s get streetwise
When Dundee United get just a little more streetwise, draws like Saturday’s against Rangers can become victories, boss Craig Levein believes (writes Tom Duthie).
For the second clash against the Ibrox men in a row, United roared back from a goal down to take the lead, but were unable to hold it.

And, while he will never discourage his troops from attacking, Craig feels it was too positive an approach that led to Kyle Lafferty’s late equaliser snatching victory away.

“When we got our two goals, we were well on top for a spell and I was wanting the third — we had a couple of opportunities and probably should have got it,” he said.

“However, at times when we are in those positions, we do need to be a bit more streetwise and realise the game will ebb and flow.

“There was always going to be a spell when Rangers came back at us and, when that happens, rather than being gung-ho and attacking with gay abandon like we did, we needed to take the sting out of things for a while and concentrate on keeping possession.

“I don’t want to be over critical and I never want to stop the players trying to get forward, and part of the problem is down to us still being a young team, but it is something we have to learn.”

And the gaffer was keen to stress he’d seen plenty positives during the 2-2 thriller.

“Even in the first half when Rangers were on top, that was not down to any big problem. It manifested itself as one because we needed to get our wide men to play a few yards narrower, but, once we got that sorted at the break, our midfield had the better of the game.”

One of the midfield, Morgaro Gomis, took a knock on the thigh, but he is expected to be fit in a day or so.

Moving away from the weekend events, Craig made it clear Sunderland have not been in touch to recall on-loan striker Roy O’Donovan, though he won’t be surprise if that changes.

“I haven’t spoken to Sunderland and they haven’t been in touch, but I do have it in my mind that, once they appoint a new manager, they will want all their players back so he can assess them and, like all loan deals, now there is a clause that allows them to recall Roy at any time.”
