Dee look to get back in mix
Jocky Scott believes a win for his rejuvenated Dundee at Livingston tomorrow night will put them right back in the First Division promotion mix (writes Tom Duthie).
Even with the league nearing it’s mid-point, though, he believes nine other teams can consider themselves there or thereabouts.

“Obviously, if we can win tomorrow, we have to think we are right in it. We’d be six points behind the leaders with a lot of games to go, so we would have to be considered one of the teams who could get promotion,” he said.

“However, if you look at the table, you have to say that, right now, pretty much everyone can feel they still have a chance of finishing top.”

That situation will change as teams fall away as the season develops, but Jocky believes it is going to be a close race right up to the final few games.

“It is a very tight league and I have not seen any team who looks like they are going to run away with it. Everyone will drop points and it is going to be a case of trying to make sure you are the team who drops fewest.”

After the weekend postponement at Livingston, it is looking likely the game will beat the weather tomorrow night and, pleased as he is to see old adversary Paul Hegarty back in management, Jocky is keen to see him start with a disappointment.

“Heggie called last night to say the pitch was OK and they have put covers down now, so we are expecting it to go ahead.

“I’ve wished him all the best and I genuinely hope he does very well there, but I’ve told him the success has to start after this game.”

The big selection dilemma for the Dark Blues is who replaces the absent Mikael Antoine-Curier up front — the gaffer has confirmed it will be a straight choice between Bob Davidson and Colin McMenamin.

Craig’s Old Firm poser
Dundee United boss Craig Levein held up his hands today and admitted he did not know when was the best time to be facing the Old Firm (writes Tom Duthie).
He takes his side into battle against Rangers at Tannadice on Saturday on the back of the Ibrox men’s 7-1 annihilation of Hamilton Accies and, while that makes it look a daunting task, Craig does not believe facing them after a defeat would be any easier.

“The honest answer is I don’t know if it is better to get them after they’ve won, like Saturday, or when they’ve lost a game,” he said.

“Right now, I think you could say you are glad you are not Hamilton, because look what happened to them because of Rangers’ reaction to a defeat at Hearts.

“How they’ll be on Saturday I don’t know, but I expect it to be a very tough fixture and the fact they had players like Miller, Davis and Papac back at the weekend definitely strengthened them.

“What is good for us, though, is we are going into this one on the back of two good wins and we want to keep that form going.”

United will have striker Roy O’Donovan back in the squad for Saturday. A virus ruled the Irishman out of contention for a place at Inverness and he is just one of several players who have been under the weather in recent days.

He was, however, in training today and the good news was that, despite a few sniffles, the rest of the squad completed the workout as well.

Tickets for the Co-Op Cup semi-final, which goes ahead against Celtic next month, go on sale next Monday from the club shop. There will be a three-day priority period for season ticket holders only, with priority also being given to members of Arabzone, Arabtrust and the Dundee United Lottery for the remainder of the week. General sales start on Monday, December 22.

Fringe benefit
A number of St Johnstone fringe men received a run-out in a closed-door game against Dunfermline in Perth today (writes James Masson).
However, Kevin James wasn’t among them as he is still bothered by a back problem. Jody Morris and Collin Samuel are suffering from knocks received against QOS, but they aren’t bad enough to rule them out of this Saturday’s home match against Morton.

Meanwhile, Saints have extended the loan of striker Steven Doris to Arbroath until the end of the year.
