| Making his first SPL start since the draw with Celtic in mid-August, the midfielder showed he’s kept himself in good nick by grabbing the third goal in an impressive win at Inverness on Saturday.
That put United back into third place and Robertson’s display was further confirmation of the strong squad now operating at Tannadice.
“I was pleased for David because he has had to wait for his chance to get back in, despite not having done anything wrong when he dropped out,” said Craig.
“At times, while he’s been out, I know he has been disappointed not to get back in, but, in training and reserve games, he has always shown me the right attitude and made me think about using him.
“That’s exactly what you need from your players and it was good to see him get his reward at Inverness.”
Also getting a pat on the back was scorer of the opening goal Jon Daly, and now that his injury problems of the last season and a bit appear to be behind him, his gaffer is looking forward to more goals.
“Jon is benefiting from a run of games in the first team and I thought his all-round performance on Saturday was good.
“He is a player who I try to find space for when he’s fit, because I like the way he goes about his business and what he gives us.”
The big Irishman is out of contract at the end of the season, but those words are a clear indication the only team he is likely to be signing a new deal with is his current employers.
Looking at Saturday’s game as a whole, Craig labelled the win far bigger than Inverness’s abysmal home record — one win this term — suggests.
“Right now, they may be more suited to games away from home, but they are always hard opponents and, historically, it has been a very difficult place for us to go.
“The first half was pretty even, but I was very pleased with the way we stepped up after half-time.”
