43 drivers caught using mobile phones
Forty-three drivers were caught using their mobile phones while driving in Tayside yesterday (writes Stefan Morkis).
Tayside Police officers took to the roads as part of a high-profile national clampdown on drivers who use their phones while behind the wheel.

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing in Tayside, said he was amazed at the number of drivers continuing to flout the law.

He said their irresponsibility was even more shocking because of the hazardous driving conditions caused by the wintry weather yesterday.

“I never cease to be amazed at the stupidity of some drivers, who continue to ignore the law and, more importantly, the common sense advice we regularly give to reduce their chances of being involved in an accident,” he said.

“There is simply no way they are able to be in a position to handle their vehicle quite so well when using a mobile phone.

“Drivers must realise that driving requires a great deal of concentration at all times.

Each of the offenders was given a conditional offer of a fixed penalty of £60 and three-points on their driving licence.

Chief inspector Bowman added, “Aside from the financial penalty and the associated three points, I implore drivers to consider the potential cost of their actions.

“With Christmas on the horizon, do you really want to risk your life, or anyone else’s, for a phone call?

“It's not worth it — don’t risk it.”
