WITH THE Chancellor acting as Father Christmas to the banking system with his billion-pound payments handouts, can he give his festive spirit to the Christmas bonus of £10 he hands out to pensioners every year?
This was first given out in 1972 and has remained the same ever since.
One has to ask, how far does £10 go these days?
If this had to be linked to the retail price index to pensions it would be worth £68.
Had it been linked to the rise in average earnings it would now be worth £121.
The one-off payment of £60 being given to pensioners in January 2009 should now be given as the Christmas bonus each year.
Mr Chancellor, stop being the Scrooge to pensioners and give us a Merry Christmas. — Jack Stewart, National Pensioners Convention, Potterhill Flats, Perth.
Dundee station needs investment
Dundee Station
AS A regular rail traveller from Dundee, I ask why there is still no sign of any investment in Dundee railway station?
For a city that is trying to attract tourists, has a very large student population and attracts thousands of shoppers from the local area, I find it very strange that the city is struggling to find any investment money for the station.
I read over and over again that stations around the central belt of Scotland are being upgraded and railway lines electrified.
Just recently it has been announced that the small town of Gourock railway station in Strathclyde is to receive £5m investment and towns like Livingston and Bathgate are almost opening the doors to their brand new rail stations.
If Transport Scotland is being run by people who live and work in the Central Belt what hope have places like Dundee got of seeing any investment?
It’s all fine and well to know that Dundee MSPs will bring up the subject to the Transport Minister but time and time again he has shown no interest in what they say. — S. B.
Bills don’t add up
I AM an electric pre-payment key meter holder and I was dismayed to read the letter regarding pre-payments that do not add up. I am also in dispute.
The total I have paid and showing on my meter is not the amount I have in receipts. I have contacted the relevant people about this and was told this could be that when I purchased payment at the shop, they put in the wrong amount, but gave me a receipt for the amount I paid.
I am also in dispute with Hydro Electric as to the amount I have paid for electric since October 7, 2008, which is £180. I only use basic electricity and have a small storage heater on in the hallway and I am in a one-bedroom flat and out working all day, six days a week.
Something is going wrong in the process to work out what I should be paying and I am determined to work out what it is. — Dismayed.
Victims of addicts need help too
REGARDING THE frustrated parent, who complained of having to wait 10 weeks for help for their child.
This doesn’t seem too long considering I have been waiting years in trying to get something done about anti-social tenants, many of whom were drug dealers.
They take drugs in my close, and there is always anti-social behaviour.
Too many times I hear of drug abusers ‘demanding’ help, but where’s the help for their victims?
There isn’t any at all. They are left to get on with it.
Maybe the drug abusers who come off drugs should be made to go cold turkey, because they don’t give a second thought to anyone they have hurt or abused. — Abused.
Great shop
I HAVE just been to the charity shop on Turnberry Avenue, Ardler.
There are plenty of smashing bargains and the staff are very friendly and ready to help in lots of ways.
I know it’s not long open and, like everything else, it takes time for lots of folk to know about it.
I hope to be dropping in again soon. — GrannyFlood, Ardler.
