| But the Tele understands that Tobin — jailed for a minimum of 30 years in the city yesterday for the slaying of Vicky Hamilton — has been looked at by the team probing the notorious Templeton Woods murders.
Officers investigating the death of Carol Lannen in Dundee in 1979 declined to confirm today whether Tobin had been considered as a suspect.
A spokesman for the force said, “It would be wholly inappropriate for us to name any one individual in connection with a murder investigation. Where any new information comes to light in relation to the murder of Carol Lannen, it will be examined and assessed appropriately.”
Carol’s body was found in Templeton Woods, near Dundee, on March 21, 1979. She was last seen at about 8pm the previous day in the area of Exchange Street, Dundee, where she was seen to get into the passenger seat of a red vehicle driven by a man.
A UK-wide investigation, named Operation Anagram, has been set up to investigate 62-year-old Tobin’s past and any possible link with cold cases from Glasgow to Brighton.
The “scoping” exercise was carried out by every UK force following the Kluk trial and had a particular focus on sex crimes and missing women.
A spokeswoman for the operation said that, so far, no further evidence had been found to link Tobin to other crimes. However, inquiries are at an early stage.
“Operation Anagram continues to be managed by Strathclyde Police with established links to all UK police forces under the overview of ACPO/ACPOS,” added Detective Superintendent David Swindle of the west coast force.
“Peter Tobin is known to have travelled extensively throughout the UK over the 62 years of his life and inter force liaison is important to correlate any potential links between his movements and outstanding missing females or victims of crime.
“At this time, Operation Anagram continues to be a live national scoping exercise to identify whether there are any issues of concern that will require further action.
“There is no plan by any UK police force to search any premises but these options will be considered should the intelligence and evidence developed within operation Anagram warrant it.”
The cold case Operation Trinity was launched by Tayside Police to review the murders of Carol and Elizabeth McCabe, whose bodies were dumped at Templeton Woods more than a quarter of a century ago.
Police have acknowledged they are not pursuing any active leads in relation to the death of Ms McCabe following the acquittal of Vincent Simpson at the High Court last year. |
