Think again plea on bus changes

St Mary’s resident Stella Hutchison hands over the petition to Councillor Borthwick and local councillor Kevin Keenan.

Depute Lord Provost Ian Borthwick today said he hopes the strength of feeling about Travel Dundee’s route changes will persuade the company to review its timetables (writes Graeme Strachan)
Mr Borthwick was speaking after receiving a petition at City Chambers from St Mary’s residents angry about cuts to their bus services.

Changes introduced by Travel Dundee’s parent company, National Express, have led to a storm of complaints from bus passengers.

The 1A 1B and 1C services have been combined into a single timetable, which residents say is leaving them inconvenienced.

Many are unhappy they are now having to get two buses to work or are missing appointments due to the service changes and up to 500 names have been gathered.

Councillor Borthwick urged Travel Dundee to listen to customers. He said, “We are aware there have been major changes to bus routes — major revisions — and this is causing concern among many people throughout the city.

“The particular bus route affecting these people is the 1C, which is causing significant difficulties to pensioners and workers. The routes are also limiting access to doctors’ surgeries, community centres and other facilities. Concerns have also been raised with regard to accessing the rehabilitation facility at Kings Cross Hospital.

“They are not alone – there are also issues in other parts of the city. We’re hoping this expression of opinion will induce them (Travel Dundee) to have a review of this particular route.

“I know there is a balance that has to be struck but they must take these factors into account much more than they have done.”
