Celebration as new school is opened

The wholesale transformation of the Dundee schools estate continued unabated today with the official opening of a third new primary school in less than a month (writes Graham Huband).
A celebration was held at St Andrew’s Roman Catholic Primary School in St Leonard’s Place, coming hard on the heels of similar ceremonies at Claypotts Castle and Downfield Primary Schools.

The schools have all been built under Dundee City Council’s £90 million Public Private Partnership scheme under which four schools in total have been opened this year and two more primaries and two secondaries will open their doors next year.

Council administrator leader Councillor Kevin Keenan performed the official opening of St Andrew’s today where the ceremony included music performed by pupils, hymns and poetry.

Councillor Keenan said, “It is an honour to officially open the new St Andrew’s RC Primary School. This is an historic occasion and a celebration for everyone involved with the school.

“The city council has worked closely with the educational representative of the Diocese of Dunkeld, Mgr Ken McCaffrey, head teachers, staff, pupils and families to make this new school possible.

“This state of the art primary has been designed to meet the educational challenges of the 21st century and shows how Dundee City Council is committed to investing in the future of education.”

The two-stream primary — created through the merger of St Columba’s and St Margaret’s and situated on the former Macalpine Primary site — has a roll of 340 pupils spread between 14 classrooms.

There are also resource rooms, a music and drama studio, assembly and games hall and nursery.

The Rt Rev Vincent Logan, Bishop of Dunkeld, was on hand to solemnly bless the primary today.

Dundee City Council’s education convener Councillor Laurie Bidwell said, “These new schools form part of our wider strategy to improve attainment and achievement and to help even more children to succeed at school.”
