“As an U/14 side, we won the Scottish Cup, the league title and three local cups that year,” said Peter, who was a coach with the team.
“In the previous season, from the U/10 group, we also won leagues and cups.
“In addition, we entered several tournaments and did very well in them.
“On the whole, we were good ambassadors for the city of Dundee and were well received wherever we travelled.
“Gary Skelly was the manager, with myself as coach, and, along with the parents, we worked as a complete unit.
“Gary worked quietly behind the scenes, but all his hard work paid off on the park.
“The team had well-disciplined players and I can’t really single any out for special praise as they all played their part in the club.
“In addition, lots of praise must go to Davie Webster for his part in keeping the club going through sticky times.
“Some of our lads such as Jackie Thomson, John McIlravey and Brian Stewart may be still playing at junior level, while Peter Irvine, who was also interesting Blackburn Rovers, went to St Johnstone.”
BUILDERS UNITED . . . AN UPDATE
More on BUILDERS UNITED FC came from MAUREEN RITCHIE, of Kirkton Road East, Dundee.
The 1950s team has been featured in our October 12 and 24 editions.
“My father Tommy Muir — he was also known to some as Myles — helped run the team,” she said.
“The personnel of the team and committee was made up of workers from the building trade, mainly the Dundee Public Works.
“LAWRIE BLYTH, the first Catholic to play for Rangers, also turned out for Builders at one time.
“My dad is pictured at front right (on the top picture below).
“The only other name I know is Bill Watson (middle of back row in same photo).”
Maureen also enclosed the photo (below, second-top) of another Builders side from even further back, but doesn’t have any details.
GOALKEEPER PICKED OUT AS THE MISSING PLAYER
Dundee reader RUTH STEWART recognised most of the players in the BUTTERBURN PRIMARY SCHOOL photo (Nov. 7), sent in by DAVIE WATSON of Canada.
“They were all in my class at the school,” said Ruth.
“I can name everyone in the team except the goalkeeper and he is the only one not mentioned, so he must be the one who was missed out by Davie.”
PLEA FROM DUNDEE UNITED
Dundee United director DEREK ROBERTSON has turned to BwB for help in connection with their second Player's Hall of Fame Dinner on January 30.
“We’re trying to get in touch with the family of Peter McKay,” he said.
“I got an address and phone number for his widow (in Crosby) from Bill Greig of the Business Club, but, so far, have been unable to make contact via that route.
“Bill thinks there is a daughter in England and, of course, there may be other family or friends who can help.”
If anyone has any info, contact communications@dundeeunitedfc.co.uk or phone the club on 01382 833166.
GUNNERS AFC REUNION
Gunners AFC played in the Dundee Sunday Morning AFA in the early 1990s, winning the title in season 1994-95.
Players from that era recently held a reunion in the Broughty Ferry hostelry from which they took their name (see second-bottom photo).
