Fourth time lucky for Asda
If the development gets the go-ahead, it will be fourth time lucky for Asda in the west end of Dundee.
The company was previously granted planning permission by Dundee City Council to build a supermarket and filling station on South Road Park, near the junction with Myrekirk Road.

However, the matter was referred to the then Scottish Executive because the land involved was used for recreational purposes and is council-owned.

A lengthy, complex planning inquiry was mooted, involving five major supermarket-related developments, but Asda eventually abandoned their plans after the release by the city council of some of the findings of a major public local inquiry into Dundee’s local plan review, which resulted in a recommendation to be made to councillors to delete the company’s allocation of land from the finalised new local plan.

The company also withdrew from plans to build a store on nearby Myrekirk Park due to the proximity of prehistoric standing stones known as the Gourdie Stone Circle.

Asda also lost out on plans to develop the site of the former Valentines greetings card factory overlooking Kingsway West, at Dunsinane Industrial Estate.

Alan Mitchell, chief executive of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, warmly welcomed the announcement which, he said, is a great endorsement for the city as a business location.

“Obviously we’re very pleased with this announcement. It is very positive, fantastic news, and it’s great to see such a significant development going there.

“It shows a commitment to Dundee and Angus, and hopefully the local authority’s planning department will give it the go-ahead as it will be a fantastic endorsement for the area.

“The potential for this area is evidenced by these people that this is still a great business location.”

Dundee West MP Jim McGovern said, “I am encouraged and excited by this great news for Dundee. I met with James Harbison, the liaison between Asda and NCR and two further NCR representatives last week to discuss their plans.

“As well as consolidating the 200 NCR jobs which are located on this site, this development will created a further 650 new jobs for Dundee. The people of Dundee will not need to be reminded that this is near the number of NCR jobs that were lost at this site in 2007.

“This is a massive boost of confidence in the Dundee workforce.”
