| A report to go before councillors next week suggests the rent for the 14,000 houses and flats the council owns might rise by an average of £3.66 per week.
That is 7% higher than the current average rent of £52.33 per week.
The council has already been in talks with tenants’ organisations over its proposals, but it now plans to hold a wider public consultation.
Housing convener George Regan said, “We want to give our tenants the opportunity to influence rent levels and other charges affecting them, so a range of options is being put forward for consideration.”
The housing committee will be asked to give the go-ahead for the consultation on Monday, allowing information to be included in a housing bulletin that will be sent to all tenants in December.
The final decision on the rent rise will be taken early next year and the new level will come into force in April. Various other charges, such as concierge services, garage and lock-up rental and heating are also set to increase. |
