Antibiotics campaign launched

A campaign to warn the public about the dangers of over-reliance on antibiotics was launched in Dundee today (writes David Clegg).
To coincide with European Antibiotic Resistance Day tomorrow, posters and leaflets have been distributed to all private and council nurseries.

The posters promote simple measures parents can take to avoid their child developing an infection and what to do if their child becomes unwell.

Overuse of antibiotics causes bacteria to change and develop resistance making them harder to treat.

NHS Tayside’s Dundee Community Health Partnership and Dundee City Council Education Department have teamed up for the campaign.

Louise Gourlay a practice pharmacist and campaign organiser, said, “It was agreed nurseries in Dundee would be a good venue to target the parents of young children, who are more likely to go to their GP when their child has an infection.

“Using medicines like paracetamol and ibuprofen can help to reduce pain and fever and make children feel more comfortable until symptoms subside.

“There will always be a place for antibiotics for serious bacterial infections, and if a doctor does issue a prescription for an antibiotic it is very important to complete the course.”
