Vigilance urged after break-ins
Tayside Police again urged householders today to be vigilant after a string of housebreakings or attempted housebreakings across Dundee (writes Steven Bell.)
In the last seven days there have been 14 break-ins or attempts, predominantly in the north-east of the city.

In nine of the crimes, thieves either forced a window or attempted to get in via a window.

Officers are particularly concerned that, in three instances, windows had been left open, making the possibility of committing crime all the easier for the speculative thief.

There have been a further four crimes in which a thief simply walked in through an open or unlocked door.

Divisional crime prevention officer Constable Colin Brough said, “We make no apologies for continuing to put out the After Dark message.

“We need all householders to think about their home security and make life as difficult as possible for the opportunist housebreaker.

“All ground floor or other vulnerable windows should be fitted with key operated locking devices. These can either be an integral part of the window’s handle or an additional key operated lock. DIY stores, security shops and ironmongers stock a wide range of suitable locking devices for all types of windows, including sash windows.

“These are inexpensive, easy to fit and a very worthwhile investment. The Claverhouse Group may be able to assist with the supply and fitting of a number of home security devices and they can be contacted on Dundee 828828.

“A locked and properly secured window acts as a deterrent to the housebreaker, leaving them with the high risk option of physically breaking the glass to climb in.

“By doing so, the thief creates noise, attracts attention and invariably leaves a trail of evidence, including DNA – all of which increases their chances of being caught.”

The force is also concerned that sheds and other outbuildings continue to be targeted, and urged householders to take security precautions.
