Letters - 12 November 2008
Heads should be bowed with shame
Watching Remembrance Day on TV and the veterans marching with pride, medals gleaming and flags flying, it brought a lump to my throat to remember that many give their todays for our tomorrows.

These are the same veterans who liberated Europe in the Second World War, and many are now in their 80s. What it the Government’s reward?

It is give them the lowest pensions in Europe, and when they reach the magic age of 80 they are further rewarded with a 25p increase on their pension and expected to be satisfied.

I call this a complete disgrace. Politicians who are well aware of this situation and stand with bowed heads at the Cenotaph should be ashamed of themselves. — Jack Stewart, National Pensioners Convention, Potterhill Flats, Perth.

Balmossie Station ‘sleepy hollow’

While I appreciate firemen can sometimes have a difficult and dangerous job, out of all the emergency services they have the best working conditions by far.

They can sleep on the night shift, have a gym, TV, pool tables, get their meals etc.

On top of that they have just received an inflation-busting pay rise.

I am sure that management has done its sums and worked out that Balmossie does not merit a full-time crew.

Carnoustie is adequately covered by retained firemen and I don’t see why Monifieth and Barnhill won’t be sufficiently covered at night by retained staff.

Balmossie has been known as “sleepy hollow” in the fire service.

I suspect one of the main reasons for the protest is that the full-time crew kept at the station will have to do four day shifts and this could impede on their second jobs. — Smokey.

New resident’s worry over Emmockwoods
I have just moved to Emmockwoods in Dundee and have a couple of gripes regarding the residents and the area.

The car driver who lives in Emmockwoods Crescent and drives like Lewis Hamilton needs to start thinking that the chances of killing or harming a child in the street are very high if continuing in this manner.

The main entrance to Emmockwoods, William Fitzgerald Way, needs to be a 30mph zone instead of the 55-70mph which seems to be the norm?

I do hope these drivers who don’t abide to the 30mph are ashamed of themselves and hopefully we can stop this before it’s too late.

Also, will the fireworks next year begin on the 5th of November and end on the 5th?

Starting on the first of the month and still continuing is out of order. My dog and two young kids are petrified of them. — Kramser

Abolishing bus route “unfair”
I was disgusted to hear that Travel Dundee has abolished the 29 bus service in the evenings to the Technology Park at Invergowrie.

As people are all too aware, it is getting far more dangerous for young people to walk the streets at night.

Our workforce has a majority of students working in the evening who will now have to look elsewhere.

I would see reason if this was due to something of great importance, but to me it seems it is only due to people going to bingo at night complaining about waiting an extra five minutes.

I am led to believe there is still a circular bus, but that only covers a small area of Dundee, whereas the 29 goes straight through.

I am sure anyone who reads this will agree that this is very unfair to the young hard workers of Dundee. — Very Angry Worker.

Much needed service
Contrary to some Readers’ Letters, I congratulate Travel Dundee for its decision to re-route the number 15 bus, which is now supplying a much needed service to non-drivers at the Baldovie Toll end of Peebles and Hawick Drives and surrounding streets.

This 20-minute service means we no longer have a 15- minute walk to and from the previously nearest stop on Berwick Drive.

While I can understand Whitfield residents’ reluctance to have an extra 10 minutes added to their journey, they will still have the choice of six buses an hour once the timetable is established.

Any change brings teething problems, but whether the route round Whitfield stays anti-clockwise or reverts back to the original, please, please, Travel Dundee, keep the detour up Peebles Drive. — Granny Happy Feet.
