Sandaza a certainty
He’s available again after suspension, but unlucky Roy O’Donovan cannot expect to return to the starting line-up when Dundee United face Aberdeen at Tannadice on Saturday (writes Tom Duthie).
The Irish striker was banned for Tuesday’s thrilling draw at Rangers after falling victim to what his manager believes was an unjust red card at Falkirk last weekend.

While, however, Craig Levein still has every sympathy for him, that is unlikely to extend to handing him an immediate return.

“What’s happened is harsh on Roy, but I am now in a situation where in his replacement (Francisco Sandaza) I have a striker who has scored two goals in his last game, and it was at Ibrox,” said Craig.

“If I didn’t play him after a performance like that, there would be questions, and rightly so. The way Sandaza played, means, for me, he is an automatic starter on Saturday.

“That’s unlucky for Roy, because he has been doing well, but I think it’s an obvious choice.”

And, while his players put in a hard shift on Tuesday and are in the middle of a run of four games in 11 days, the manager has had no thoughts of bringing in fresh legs.

“We are still early enough in the season and this is really the first run of midweek games we’ve had, so I think the players can handle it. If it was January or February it might be an issue, but we have a young, fit squad and I believe they’ll cope no problem.”

Add to that his disappointment with the 2-0 reserve defeat at St Mirren yesterday and it looks set to be an unchanged United line-up this weekend.

“If I had been thinking about changes, I might not be now, because we had a strong team out yesterday and no-one did themselves any favours. We did not play well and were well beaten.”

Sean Dillon took a knock at Ibrox, while fellow-defender Darren Dods aggravated an ankle problem he’s been carrying for the last few matches, but both are on course to face the Dons.

Definitely out again will be Jon Daly. It had been hoped he would return, but, as he recovers from a groin strain, the Irishman is still only jogging and is not now expected back until Saturday week and the trip to Killie.

Paton poised to face Pars
The injury list may still have almost as many names on it as a team sheet, but Dundee should be boosted by the return of one influential performer at Dunfermline on Saturday (writes Tom Duthie).
Full-back Eric Paton, who has been in the wars recently with shoulder and ankle trouble, trained with the first team today and is expected to be available for East End Park.

After taking a knock against Airdrie United last Saturday, young striker Bryan Deasley was also back at work today and will be available for selection.

While manager Jocky Scott is actively looking to add to his squad via emergency loans, however, the likely presence of Paton will be the only boost this weekend.

“Ray Farningham and I have started taking in games so we can see people who are not in first teams right now, but who could still do a job for us,” he said.

“Getting one or two in until the turn of the year when some of our long-term injured will be back would be good, but nothing is going to be done before Saturday.”

Tomorrow night, Dens Park will be the venue for the latest game in this season’s Victory Shield series when Scotland play host to Northern Ireland at under-16 level. Kick off is at 7.40

Geoff hails fans
St Johnstone chairman Geoff Brown was delighted with the support his side received in their win away to Dunfermline last Saturday (writes James Masson).
Nearly 2000 Saints fans made the trip and also made plenty of noise.

Now Geoff wants to see a repeat when Ross County come to McDiarmid Park on Saturday.

He said, “It was super to have such a good number of fans at Dunfermline and the support was well appreciated.

“The Dunfermline fans were a bit on the dismal side and that can be labelled at our fans at times at McDiarmid.

“Our supporters were also very colourful at East End Park and the enthusiastic way they greeted Liam Craig’s winner was great to see. They were proud to be Saints fans and to let folk know where their allegiance lay.

“And the club’s directors get a great deal of satisfaction from fans coming to games and enjoying themselves.

“We want them to look at every game as being party time — and make no bones about it, the players thrive on support like last Saturdays.”
