St Andrew’s role for city
Culture Minister Linda Fabiani today urged Dundonians to take part in celebrations for St Andrew’s Day as she launched a programme of events taking place across Scotland (writes James Williamson).
Edinburgh will host the flagship St Andrew’s DO on November 30, but ceilidhs, attractions and celebrations will take place throughout the country.

City Square will be the focus for Dundee’s celebrations, with music and highland dancing forming part of a live radio broadcast.

Music and dance will also lead the way at the Forum and Wellgate Centres, while the Overgate Centre will host the a competition to find the Face of Scotland.

Dundee International Women’s Centre will support the One Scotland, Many Cultures campaign by featuring Dundee women hailing from all over the world.

The Steeple Church will host a lunchtime concert, while the Sensation Science Centre will highlight the work of Scottish scientists, with exhibitions and a treasure trail.

And Camperdown Wildlife Centre will take a step back in time for a medieval day, with falconry, animals, face-painting, stocks, competitions and performers.

“St Andrew’s Day is an opportunity for everyone at home, and our friends around the world, to celebrate Scotland — from our rich heritage to our vibrant modern culture,” said Ms Fabiani.

The Scottish Government hopes to promote St Andrew’s Day ahead of Homecoming 2009, a year-long festival celebrating Scotland’s culture and achievements and ties of family and friendship around the world.
