Ready for Disney dress rush

Delighted seven-year-old Lucy Mair, from Cupar, was one of the first to get a good look at the dresses in the Milton of Craigie store.

Staff at Asda stores in Dundee are geared up for a rush of starstruck fans hoping to snap up replica prom dresses from Disney’s latest High School Musical film (writes Eve Noon).
The dresses, which went on sale at the Milton and Kirkton stores today, have been made popular by the High School Musical 3: Senior Year characters Gabriella Montez and Sharpay Evans.

Fashionistas can buy the floral black and cream creation and the bright pink dress featured in the prom scenes.

“The dresses will definitely be popular,” said Lesley White, George colleague at Asda Kirkton.

“I can’t see them being on sale for long, because as soon as people come into the George department they will see them.”

Asda Milton received 24 of each style and girlswear assistant Frances Milne said, “There were a couple of customers asking about the dresses at the weekend. I think they will be popular, especially for Christmas and parties.”

The dresses from the film have been replicated stitch for stitch and are £16 for age four sizes upwards, then increase to £17 from age six to 12.

The supermarket chain reported 20,000 sales of the Gabriella dress through waiting lists before it even hit the shops.

It predicted waiting lists being introduced at all of its stores to cope with demand.

“But neither of the Dundee stores is planning this at the moment.

The High School Musical phenomenon started as a low-budget TV movie. But when the third instalment premiered in London, it attracted crowds of fans.

Advance ticket sales for the film, which opens in the UK on Wednesday, have broken all records.

The Odeon at Douglas Road, in Dundee, is showing it on four screens.

“Ticket sales have been very busy,” said Kim Thorne, general manager.

“We are not sold out yet but that’s because we have so many showings planned. We will also have a dance troupe in the foyer at the weekend.”
