| After giving his men two days off in the aftermath of the sad news of Eddie Thompson’s passing, team boss Craig Levein felt the time was right to get back to work.
“It is going to take time, but we have to get back to normal and it was right the players should be training so we took them to St Andrews.
“Obviously, just the fact we do not have a game tomorrow makes it different and is a reminder in itself, but the boys had a few days off last week as well and they need to be working.”
After training, Craig was heading back to Tannadice to view the many tributes to the chairman that were still being left by United fans and other well wishers.
The sea of tangerine and black that has become a shrine to Eddie at the gates of the stand bearing his name will remain there until at least tomorrow week and the visit of St Mirren, the first game after his death.
Today, the club’s directors were meeting to discuss ways of making that fixture as accessible as possible to the many fans who will want to attend and make sure it is a fitting tribute to his memory.
“We have been overwhelmed by the numbers who have turned up and continue to turn up to pay their respects — it has been amazing and we would like the fans to know how much it is appreciated,” said director of communications Derek Robertson.
“As well as the tributes, we have now opened a book of condolence in the main foyer here at Tannadice and we will be staying open between 11 am and 3 pm over the weekend so people can sign it.”
The chairman’s funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon in St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Queen Street, Broughty Ferry. In accordance with his wishes, it has been requested those attending wear colourful clothing.
Through necessity the service, at 1 pm, will be open to close family and invited friends only, but the ceremony will be broadcast outside the church.
The Thompson family have requested family flowers only and asked that donations, if desired, be made to Ward 32 at Ninewells Hospital, where Eddie was treated.
There will be a private burial service after the church service. |
