Dundee to share in Tesco jobs boom
Dundee is set to benefit from a Scotland-wide expansion by Tesco that will see 1700 jobs created across the country in the next year (writes Graham Huband).
The retail giant confirmed that a significant proportion of the new jobs would be coming to the city via the firm’s new Tesco Extra store in South Road.

The store is due to open in February and requires 390 staff — although 190 of those are expected to be staff from the Lochee store earmarked for closure. Recruitment of a further 200 employees will begin in the coming months.

The news comes on the back of Tesco’s decision to relocate up to 60 “back office” jobs from its customer contact centre at Dryburgh Industrial Estate to a base in Bangalore, India.

The company assured the Tele that staff were not being made redundant at the Baird Avenue call centre and would instead be offered alternative employment.

Tesco announced in May it was creating 300 new contact centre jobs at the site and a spokesman confirmed recruitment was well ahead of schedule, with 177 staff already on the books and dozens more expected to be added to the payroll in the coming weeks.

Despite the credit crunch, the supermarket posted a 10% increase in profits at the end of September and announced it was to forge ahead with expansion plans.

On the back of this success, the company pledged to create 1700 jobs in Scotland over the coming year.

Chief Executive Terry Leahy said, “Tesco is at its best in tough markets responding to the changing needs of customers and that’s why we have been able to make good progress this year.

“Our business is strong, broadly-based, increasingly international and, I believe, well-placed not just to cope with the challenges which lie ahead but also grasp the growth opportunities open to us by continuing to invest in our strategy.”
