Safety worries at bus stop

This photo, taken by the letter writer, shows cars parked by the bus stop.

In November of last year, I contacted councillors for Dundee’s East End regarding the lack of safety at the bus stop at Redmyre Gardens, situated outside the shops on Craigie Avenue.

For years, this stop has had no road markings indicating it is a bus bay and as a result customers and employees of the shops park their cars in it.

I received a reply from Councillor Christina Roberts, who in turn had contacted the Planning & Transportation Department.

To cut a long story short, the stop was scheduled to be moved 300 yards closer to Redmyre Gardens before March 31, 2008.

By July, the stop still had not been moved so I contacted Councillor Roberts again.

This time the reply from the Planning & Transportation Department stated that, “The accessibility improvements at Bus Stop programme was delayed.”

As each day passes without this stop being moved, lives are being put at risk because people are forced to step out into a busy road to ensure that bus drivers stop.

It’s bad enough expecting young and able-bodied people to have to do this, but Craigiebank has a high elderly population for whom there is the added danger of being unable to move quickly should a car emerge from the nearby blind junction with Strips of Craigie Road.

That’s not to mention the struggle that parents have trying to get buggies and prams onto buses. — Craigiebank Bus User.

Disgust at dog bike death
As a daily dog walker in Mill o’ Mains, Dundee, I express my utter disgust at what happened to the dog that was killed when it was struck by a scramble-bike, and how that will affect his young owner and onlookers for some time.

The boy who was walking the dog was also injured.

People on these particular type of bikes have been spotted in the park on many occasions in the few weeks leading up to this.

Only last week I saw them in the park trying to start up their bikes when I was walking my dogs and I decided to turn back home as I had a horrible feeling something tragic could happen.

I hope it will only be a matter of time before the individual responsible for this horrific death will be discovered. If guilty of an offence, I really hope that the punishment fits the crime.

It was bad enough that an animal was killed becuase of this careless behaviour, but next time it could be a child who loses their life. Action needs to be taken to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. — Resident of Heron Rise.

Keep charges
The people who want free parking at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee are typical of many in Scotland who want everything for free.

The result is Scotland is getting a bad name. So I believe we should retain the parking charges at Ninewells. — Westender, Dundee.

School tie search
As a parent of two children at Downfield Primary School, Dundee, I wonder if any parents have children going to school every day without a school tie?

I have been trying, without success, to purchase two ties since July but keep being told they are out of stock.

There are school photographs due to take place soon along with other photographic events within the school. It makes my children feel self-conscious going to school without one. —Angry Mum.

[A spokesperson for the Schoolwear Shop said, “We did run out of Downfield Primary School ties the day before the term started.

“However, we have ordered more and these should arrive next week.

“The reason it takes a while to replenish stocks is due to the fact when we order ties, the manufacturer has to then go out and order the correct cloth and has to cut the ties into shape.

“This is a time-consuming process, meaning that it can take up to a month to re-stock.

We order more stock as soon as we see the numbers falling.”]

Labour at heart of Post Office closures
I read with interest that Jim McGovern MP has started a petition to retain a post office in Lochee.

This is most curious as Mr McGovern works for the Westminster Government Minister responsible for the culling of so many vital post offices throughout Scotland.

A petition was organised in respect of car park charges at Ninewells. This petition was organised by Marlyn Glen and Jim McGovern, completely disregarding the fact that is was their own party that initiated and continued the PFI initiative. — The Watchman.

Bus routes
I would like Travel Dundee to have a rethink regarding the 18 and 19 Kirkton route.

They both now go along Gilburn Road.

I think this makes it difficult for some passengers.

Surely one could come down Old Glamis Road. If that’s not possible give us back the old bus stop between the bottom of Old Glamis Road and the end of Gilburn Road (on the return journey to town).

It used to be outside the gate at Caird Park. When you’re carrying shopping, and kids as well, it would be a great help.

I have lived here for over 30 years and find the loss of this service is very hard. — Fair Play.

Gaelic television
I’m delighted that Scotland has a new TV channel dedicated to Gaelic. Around 65,000 people speak fluent Gaelic and this is confined to the far north-west. I believe it should be taught in schools. — Dryburgh Reader.

Poem request
I am writing a poem entitled Mitchell Street School Revisited. Does anyone who was in Mrs McDonald’s or Miss Warman’s class at this Dundee school in the early sixties have a class photo I could borrow? It will be returned. E-mail scottploughman@blueyonder.co.uk — Scott Martin, Forest Park Road, Dundee.
