WANTED – BUTTERBURN REUNION

After his mother put me to rights (BwB, August 15) regarding the spelling of the family surname, DAVE EWEN came on from his current home in Liverpool in good spirit.

“Mum reads your column every week and she picks up on everything,” said Dave, a former coach with Arbroath, Brechin, Forfar and Carnoustie Panmure juniors.

On another subject, he continued, “I was speaking to JOHN SMITH recently (another very well known former Dundee junior footballer and coach), and we were talking about our time with BUTTERBURN YOUTH CLUB.

“It’s quite startling that it will be 50 years ago next year that we joined the ’Burn, with both John and I starting in May 1959.

“I remember in one of your columns quite a number of years ago that DOUGIE ROBERTSON sent in a photo of one of the Butterburn teams in which we all played.

“John and I would also like to arrange a reunion for that team next year.

“I’m sure many of those players will be reading this, so we may be able to get the ball rolling.

“I’ll come back on nearer the time with more details.”

We actually featured the photo over seven years ago — on March 30, 2001!

So I’ve resurrected this team group (second bottom photo at foot of column) from 1960-61.

Back row (from left) — D. McHardy (club official), D. Brown, I. Glass, S. Davie, J. Law, D. Robertson, J. Smith, G. Beat (club official).

Front row — A. Robertson, D. Soutar, G. Gallacher, D. Ewen, I. Clark.

As I wrote at the time, this was about four or five years before I joined the club and Gordon Gallacher was my first manager in the U/15 team, before going on to the U/16 side with Dave McHardy.

SEVERAL RESPOND, INCLUDING DUNDEE FC LEGEND

Several readers responded to last week’s photos from the WILLIE HENNESSEY Collection, as sent in by GRAEME CURR.

First up was Dundee FC legend BOBBY COX.

“That was me as a young lad in the Corinthians line-up from 1962,” said Bobby.

And, sure enough, there he was, sitting far right in the front row.

Dundee’s BRIAN HUGHES named many of the East Craigie players in the third picture down.

“Alex McCarle was the manager then,” said Brian.

“With a few other players and officials, we won the league undefeated around 1983 (P20, W18 D2) — the draws coming against both Downfield and Blairgowrie away — rare results then.

“In the photo are Alex Baxter, Andy Reilly, Neil Cathro, Jimmy Donnett, Brian Deans, Donny Mitchell, Bob Buchan, Stevie Ross, Alex McCarle, Pat Healy and George Crozier.

“There was also Ian McKaig, Albert Macpherson, Mark Bennett, Willie Hennessey, Jim McLean, Brian Hughes and Bryan Peacock.”

PAM McEWAN, of Hawick Drive, Dundee, recognised her grandad TOM GARDNER.

“He was in the third photo down, looking dapper in his bow tie,” said Pam.

Our three photos this week from Willie’s collection from the early 1950s are featured below (the top three) – top DUNDEE ARNOT, second top BROUGHTY EX-SERVICE, third top CARNOUSTIE PANMURE.

THE CHARLIE LOVE COLLECTION : PART X.

The second-last of CHARLIE LOVE’S impressive collection of photos is the DOWNFIELD JFC side of 1974-75 (bottom photo below).

Some of the first names of the players are not given.

Back row (from left) — George Cavan, Ian McNab, Mann, Baxter, Bert Ireland, Bobby Barnes, Jim Gray, Joe Brodie (committee).

Front row — Rankin, George Peacock, Gordon Pirie, Davie Fisher, Smart, Kelly.
