Animal welfare protest in Dundee
Animal welfare campaigners staged a protest in the centre of Dundee today, urging shoppers to boycott a leading shampoo brand it claims is being tested on animals (writes Sean Hamilton).
However, the company concerned said the protesters are factually incorrect and their campaign is misleading.

Animal welfare group Uncaged — backed by a 20-foot spoof bottle of Herbal Essences — asked members of the public to sign a pledge to refrain from buying the hair-care range.

The group said it had uncovered evidence that scientists working for the product’s manufacturers had force-fed a key ingredient in the shampoo to pregnant animals.

The Dundee protest kicked off the Scottish leg of a UK-wide campaign.

Celebrities such as Twiggy, Chrissie Hynde, Bill Bailey and Sue Perkins have all pledged their support.

Dr Dan Lyons, campaigns director for Uncaged, said, “Consumers are being misled by big brands who claim they don’t animal test their products.

“But that’s a red herring as most animal testing in this area is for the chemical ingredients.”

A spokeswoman for Procter and Gamble, the manufacturer of Herbal Essences, denied any wrongdoing, saying, “The Uncaged campaign is factually incorrect and misleading.

“We do not test Herbal Essences, or any of our beauty products, on animals.

“The campaign led by Uncaged relates to a study involving butylparaben which P&G conducted at the request of EU regulators in 2004 on behalf of the entire cosmetics industry.”
